To better understand the intricacies of dancing in pointe shoes, choreographer Fadi J. Khoury, artistic director of FJK Dance, took private lessons from his collaborative partner Sevin Ceviker.
“As a choreographer, I felt like I needed to learn more about dancing on pointe so that I could really know what I was asking from my dancers. So Sevin started teaching me ballet in pointe shoes. It has been an exciting change, and I feel like a baby again in the world of dance. The amount of strength and perseverance that a woman in pointe shoes has to have is by far more complicated than what a man has to do standing on his own feet.”
FJK Dance begins an eight-week tour of China on February 27.

FJK DANCE at New York Live Arts (Sept. 14-15, 7:30 p.m.). Fadi J. Khoury presents a pair of premieres and programs that strive to mix culture and dance. Along with the new “Mundo,” he offers “Tango on Point,” a work heavy on partnering that blends Argentine tango with contemporary ballet. The season is rounded out by two repertory pieces: “Echoes,” a 2015 dance for five men set to music by the Persian percussionist and composer Shamou; and “Reflections,” a 2016 piece inspired by the play of light on water, reflecting humanity’s restlessness and beauty.
